Prof. LaFrance is the Samuel S. Lionel Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law. She specializes in international intellectual property law and has authored numerous works. Her areas of expertise include patent law, conflict of laws, international intellectual property law, private international law, and copyright law.
9:30 - 10:30 a.m. John Cabeca, Director of Silicon Valley USPTO
Mr. Cabeca is the Director of the Silicon Valley United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Mr. Cabeca has been with the USPTO for more than 26 years, and previously served as the Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary of Commerce for the Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO. He began his career at the USPTO as a patent examiner, and eventually worked his way up as a Supervisory Patent Examiner and then a Patent Technology Center Director in the semiconductor and electrical systems technologies group.

10:45 - 11:45 a.m. Dr. Ghobad Heidari – Patent Valuation: A Multi-Disciplined Process
Dr. Heidari is the founder and President of GHB Intellect, a full-service IP consulting services firm, headquartered in San Diego, CA. With a cadre of 500 high-caliber technologists, specialists, and industry insiders, he leads the effort to provide various high-quality IP services to in-house as well as law firm attorneys around the world. Over the last two decades, he has had extensive experiences in IP strategy development, portfolio management, portfolio mining, infringement and validity analyses, reverse engineering, valuation, and expert testimony. For the past 3 consecutive years, he has been named as one of The World’s Leading IP Strategists by IAM Strategy 300.

12:45 - 1:45 p.m. Douglas Nemec – Ethics Issues in IP Law
Mr. Nemec is a partner in the Intellectual Property Litigation Group at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He is based out of the firm’s New York office and concentrates on intellectual property litigation and counseling.
1:45 - 2:45 p.m. Lara Pearson and Matt Francis – Brand Protection for Cannabis Trademarks
Ms. Pearson has more than 18 years of trademark experience, and has defined her mission as cultivating brand protection strategies for social enterprises that exist to make a positive difference for their communities, while anticipating IP legal issues that impact the business of her clients. She is the proprietor of her own law firm and can be found at BrandGeek.net.
Mr. Francis is a Shareholder in the firm of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, LLP. He has experience with many intellectual property matters. He has prosecuted hundreds of trademarks and participated in many proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Prof. LaFrance is the IGT Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law. Her areas of expertise include appellate law, entertainment law, patent law, trade secrets, international intellectual property law, copyright law, and trademark law.
4 - 5 p.m. Dick Schulze – Missed Opportunities: How Discrimination Against Women Inventors Has Denied Us All They Could Contribute
Mr. Schulze is counsel at Holland & Hart and works out of the firm’s office in Reno, Nevada. He has more than 30 years’ experience practicing and teaching patent and trademark law. Mr. Schulze writes and prosecutes patent and trademark applications and manages foreign counterparts, and represents clients in the computer and high-tech electronics industries.
This conference will be held in the Thomas & Mack Moot Court at the William S Boyd School fo Law.
